Restoring a foggy headlight on the Audi TT

Like so many older (as in 20 years!) cars, the TT experiences serious headlight fogging. This is presumably due to exposure to UV rays, the weather, and dirt and various other items that run into the headlights at high speeds (you can't drive this car slow).

Before: dull, milky headlight

My TT has had the right headlight replaced, probably due to repair (this is a sports car so you're supposed to drive it like one). But the left headlight is pretty dull and dim.

Luckily this is pretty easy to fix, just takes some time and elbow grease.

Tools used:

  • wet sandpaper, 800, 1000, 1500 grit

  • sanding block

  • polisher / buffer

  • orange pad for compounding

  • black pad for polishing

  • Scholl Concepts S17 for compounding and S40 for polishing

  • clear varnish to finish up

  • masking tape and a big trash bag.

So basically one starts with the rougher grit paper, working up to finer paper, then to compounding with heavier cut and finally polishing it off. Here's a pic of the work halfway through clear coating.

After: clear, shiny
